In my opinion, real estate investment trusts are a must have for any investor who wants to live off dividends, and has a long time horizon. They aren’t as exciting as other higher yielding investments like covered calls ETFs, closed-end funds, or business development companies, which I normally cover a lot more of on this channel. But REITs often provide what other high yield stocks and funds don’t, which is long term, consistent dividend growth. They also provide investors with an easy way diversifying into real estate, without having to own rental properties or commercial buildings ourselves. It’s for these reasons that REITs are likely the most popular alternative dividend paying investments that are a lot more mainstream than others.
According to the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts, there are now over 1,000 REITs listed on exchanges all over the world. About a quarter of those are found on U.S. exchanges, so there are a lot of choices that exist among REITs. There are also a lot of different types of REITs, from retail REITs to healthcare REITs.
