From Reactive to Rules-Based: If/Then Trade Management

Time is one of the only variables you can actually control.
You can’t control where SPY goes tomorrow.

You can’t control volatility or headlines.

But you can control whether you hold a trade into the final days before expiration.
As expiration gets closer, options can become more sensitive to price movement — especially near the money. That’s where last-day risk can surprise traders. A trade can look manageable for weeks, then suddenly near expiration, small moves matter a lot more (especially with 0DTE).
That’s why time-based exits are so important.

Whether you trade 45 DTE or same-day expiration, you still need a time rule.
And this is how trade management connects to automation:

Trade management becomes automation-ready when you can write it as if-then logic.
Reactive trader: “I’ll see how I feel when it happens.”

Rules-based trader: “If this happens, then I do that.”
That’s the path to a more consistent process — and why the order matters:

Create the plan → Test & optimize → Automate the plan.

Plan comes first.
