Imagine borrowing money and picking your own interest rate. Not the bank. You. A government that owes $40 trillion and paid more than $1 trillion in interest this year, more than it spent on its entire military, would pick a low rate every single time. There is a tool that lets it. The central bank announces a ceiling on the ten-year rate and buys every bond it takes to hold it there, paying with dollars that did not exist the day before. America ran this machine from 1942 to 1951. Japan ran it from 2016 to 2024 and ended up owning half its own bond market. Cheaper mortgages are the part they advertise. The part they do not advertise is who pays, and it is not the government. One thing has always sat outside the machine’s reach.
